Empowerment Self Defence and the Enneagram Unlocks Your Journey to Self Discovery

Self discovery is a journey that requires tools to understand both our inner world and how we interact with the outside world. Combining Empowerment Self Defence (ESD) with the insights of the Enneagram offers a unique path to this understanding. This approach not only builds physical confidence but also deepens emotional awareness, helping individuals connect with their true selves in powerful ways.

I note here that I do not know anyone else who combines the Enneagram with Empowerment Self Defence. I have always been fascinated by human behaviour and what makes people do what they do. The Enneagram is a beautiful framework that combines mind, body and soul work and over the decades f teaching martial arts, self defence, mediating conflicts and coaching in personal development, I have come to the belief that if one truly takes the time to Knowing themself, the ability to form positive and healthy relations with others is increased. Hence one of my favourite sayings; Kniw Thyself. It has been a belief since I was a teenager.

If students learn the art of communication, human behaviour, meditation and self-defence at a young age, the rate of interpersonal abuse would be massively reduced.

If you are looking for an Empowerment Self Defence instructor, they may niche in a different modality or just teach ESD by itself. The same goes if you are looking for an Enneagram coach; they will not be teaching ESD either. So find someone you align with and be clear about what you want to learn.

Understanding Empowerment Self Defence

Empowerment self defence is more than just learning physical techniques to protect yourself. It is a holistic practice that encourages you to reclaim your personal power and feel safe in your body. This form of self defence often includes:

  • Practical and moves designed for real-life situations

  • Building mental resilience and awareness

  • Encouraging a mindset of confidence and assertiveness

The term “empowerment” here reflects a reclaiming of identity and strength, challenging societal stigmas and promoting self-respect. It is about owning your space and your choices without fear.

How Self-Defence Builds Confidence

Learning self defence teaches you to trust your instincts and react calmly under pressure. This confidence spills over into everyday life, making it easier to set boundaries and communicate clearly. For example, someone who has practiced self defence may find it easier to say no to uncomfortable situations or stand firm in their decisions.

The Enneagram as a Tool for Self Awareness

The Enneagram is a personality system that identifies nine distinct types, each with its own motivations, fears, and growth paths. It helps people understand why they think and behave the way they do. This self-awareness is crucial for personal growth.

The Nine Types and Their Core Motivations

Each Enneagram type has a core desire and fear that shapes their worldview:

  • Type 1 seeks integrity and fears being wrong

  • Type 2 desires love and fears being unwanted

  • Type 3 wants success and fears failure

  • Type 4 craves identity and fears insignificance

  • Type 5 values knowledge and fears incompetence

  • Type 6 looks for security and fears uncertainty

  • Type 7 pursues joy and fears pain

  • Type 8 seeks control and fears vulnerability

  • Type 9 desires peace and fears conflict

Knowing your type helps you recognise patterns that might hold you back or cause stress.

Using the Enneagram to Understand Reactions

When combined with Empowerment Self Defence, the Enneagram can explain why certain situations trigger strong emotional or physical responses. For example, a Type 6 might feel intense fear in a confrontation, while a Type 8 might respond with aggression. A type 9 (like me) seeks connection and peace. They will instinctively move away from conflicts to maintain harmony. However, we know that at times, there is a need to use the voice to speak and even though it goes against all might. Understanding these tendencies allows for more mindful reactions and better control.

How Empowerment Self Defence and the Enneagram Work Together

The combination of physical self defence and the Enneagram’s emotional insight creates a balanced approach to self discovery. Here’s how they complement each other:

  • Physical safety meets emotional safety: Self Defence builds the body’s ability to protect itself, while the Enneagram builds the mind’s ability to understand and manage emotions.

  • Confidence in action and identity: Self Defence strengthens confidence in physical presence; the Enneagram strengthens confidence in personal identity.

  • Mind-body connection: Both practices encourage tuning into your body’s signals and your emotional needs, creating a deeper connection with yourself.

Practical Example

Imagine a person who leads as Enneagram Type 4, often feeling misunderstood and vulnerable. Through Empowerment Self Defence, they learn to stand firm physically, which helps reduce feelings of vulnerability. At the same time, the Enneagram helps them understand their emotional triggers and how to express themselves without fear. This dual approach leads to a stronger, more grounded sense of self. Learning your type means that there are no surprises. You can understand, from a mind, heart, and body perspective, where the energy of responding to an unwanted situation is stuck.

It is here that you can start unravelling the ball of thread that has caused confusion and mystery as to why you react in certain ways depending on certain triggers.

Steps to Begin Your Journey

If you want to explore this path, here are some practical steps:

  1. Learn the basics of Empowerment Self Defence: Find a class or instructor who focuses on practical, empowering techniques.

  2. Discover your Enneagram type: Take a reputable Enneagram test or read about the types to identify your core motivations.

  3. Reflect on your reactions: Notice how your Enneagram type influences your responses during self-defence training or real-life situations.

  4. Practice mindfulness: Use breathing exercises or meditation to stay present and connected to your body and emotions.

  5. Set personal goals: Combine physical and emotional goals, such as improving your stance and reducing anxiety in confrontations.

Overcoming Challenges on This Path

Self discovery is not always easy. You may face challenges such as:

  • Fear of vulnerability when exploring emotions

  • Physical discomfort or frustration during self defence training

  • Difficulty accepting parts of your personality revealed by the Enneagram

These challenges are part of growth. Support from instructors, coaches, or supportive communities can make a big difference.

The Lasting Impact of This Approach

Combining Empowerment Self Defence with the Enneagram creates lasting change. People often report:

  • Increased self-confidence in daily life

  • Better emotional regulation and understanding

  • Stronger boundaries and healthier relationships

  • A clearer sense of purpose and identity

This approach encourages ongoing self discovery, making it a lifelong tool for personal development. If you are curious and want to learn more, visit https://www.narrativeenneagram.org/.
